Profile

Rohit Gurunath Sharma is an Indian cricketer. Sharma is a right-handed middle-order batsman and occasional right-arm offbreak bowler. Having started his international playing career at the age of 20, Sharma quickly exhibited his athletic fielding and cool temperament to compliment his graceful strokeplay. He is pegged by many analysts to be a permanent fixture on the Indian cricket team in the next decade.

Sharma was signed up by the Deccan Chargers franchise for a sum of US$ 750,000 a year. He was one of the leading run scorers in the 2008 IPL season with 404 runs at an average of 36.72. He also held the coveted Orange Cap for a brief period.

In the first edition of the IPL, Rohit scored 404 runs in his 12 innings in the middle, with a highest score of 66, at an average of 36.73 and a strike rate of 147.45. He smashed 19 sixes and 38 fours in the tournament, in addition to 8 catches. He took 1 wicket in the tournament, in the 13 matches that he played, at an average of 25.

Rohit was highly effective with the bat at the death in the second edition of the IPL and more than handy with the ball, taking a hat-trick. As the vice-captain of the Deccan Chargers, he took a hat-trick against the Mumbai Indians, dismissing Abhishek Nayar, Harbhajan Singh and Jean Paul Duminy. In a match against Kolkata Knight Riders where 21 was required off the last over, Rohit scored 26 off the over from Mashrafe Mortaza to seal a win. He was named the best under-23 player of the tournament.
